Untitled design 5It’s been a busy election week at KRCB and we’ve been working to keep you up to date with candidate interviews and special features about local contests.

So far over 5.4 million ballots have been counted across California since the polls closed Tuesday night, but turnout for this election is low; only 23% of registered voters cast a ballot.

We still don’t know the full results for some of the marquee races, but KRCB News is here to keep you updated as the primary election results are finalized in the days ahead, and the focus shifts to November.

Below is a list of where statewide election results currently stand.
A green checkmark means the Associated Press has officially called the race:

Governor:
🔲 Steve Hilton (R)
🔲 Xavier Becerra (D)

Steve Hilton, a Republican and former Fox News host, is leading the race to be California’s next governor, but hot on Hilton’s heels in the crowded race to succeed Gavin Newsom is Democrat Xavier Becerra.

Becerra served as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services during the Biden Administration, and was a longtime and former California Attorney General. He trails Hilton by just over 100,000 votes.

Voters had 61 different candidates to choose from for governor on the primary ballot. The only other candidate to crack 1 million votes so far is billionaire philanthropist, businessman, and climate activist Tom Steyer.

With just over half the votes for governor counted statewide, Becerra is leading the way so far in Sonoma County, with over 28,000 votes, while Steyer sits on top in Marin and Mendocino, and Hilton heads the pack in Napa and Lake counties.

US House District 1:
✅ Mike McGuire (D)
✅ James Gallagher (R)

The race for California’s 1st Congressional District is a bit confusing, but here’s what is clear: Mike McGuire will face off against James Gallagher in November.

McGuire, the Democratic state senator from Healdsburg is currently coming in second in both 1st District primary races to Republican Assemblyman James Gallagher from Sutter County.

Gallagher has won the special election to fill the remainder of the late Representative Doug LaMalfa’s term – but in November he’ll be vying with McGuire for a District 1 that was remade by last year’s Proposition 50. The new 1st District covers a large chunk of Sonoma County, including Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, Windsor, Healdsburg, and Cloverdale. It’s projected to vote solidly Democratic in the November general election.

McGuire, who’s represented Sonoma County in the State Senate since 2014, has outrun Gallagher so far by more than two votes-to-one in Sonoma County.

US House District 2:
✅ Jared Huffman (D)
🔲 Robin Littau (R)

Jared Huffman, the Marin Democrat who’s represented the 2nd District since 2013, cruised to victory Tuesday night. While the Associated Press estimates more than half the ballots remain to be counted in what is now the largest congressional district California, Huffman leads his nearest challenger by almost 40,000 votes. Robin Littau, a Republican and school board member from Redding, sits in second, but that race is not fully called yet.

US House District 4:
✅ Mike Thompson (D)
🔲 Ray Riehle (R)

Mike Thompson, the incumbent Democrat from Napa, guaranteed his place on the November ballot with a strong early vote return in one of the most competitive primary elections he’s faced since first getting elected to Congress in 1998.

Coming in second in the early returns is Republican Ray Riehle, a member of the Citrus Heights Water District Board of Directors.

Eric Jones—an investor, philanthropist, and progressive Democrat endorsed by Our Revolution, the nonprofit founded by Senator Bernie Sanders—is coming in a close third. He was considered Thompson’s major competitor and has outspent him in the race, even dropping millions of his own dollars into the campaign.

I spoke with Jones Wednesday afternoon, and even though he’s in third place, he says he’s feeling positive about making up ground and advancing to the general election, especially with lots more ballots from Democratic strongholds in Sonoma and Yolo counties to be counted.
